Mitochondria are the energy generating ‘powerhouses’ within our body’s cells.
They make the energy in our cells so we can move, and give our organs the ability to function.
Unfortunately there are more mysteries associated with mitochondrial disease (Mito) than there are answers.
Mito continues to be largely misdiagnosed and is at the root of many other chronic diseases affecting millions of Canadians.
Pursuing a cure for Mito will inevitably and directly help persons with many other debilitating muscle, nervous systems, and organ related diseases.
The MitoCanada Foundation (MitoCanada) (https://mitocanada.org ) is a Registered Charitable organization in Canada that was formed in 2010 by a group of passionate Canadian parents whose previously happy, healthy children were suddenly and unexpectedly struck by mitochondrial disease.
MitoCanada’s mission is to get one step closer every day to the cure by supporting researchers and families succeed.
There are three strategic pillars of MitoCanada; 1) Patient & Family Support , 2) Awareness & Education , and (3) Advancing Research .
Funding for MitoCanada has historically and will continue to come from individuals and community donations through fundraising events, provincial and federal programs grants, other agencies and organizations, and corporate alliances and contributions.
MitoCanada has a small staff compliment directed by a Chief Executive Officer and supported by a Board of Directors with national representation.
The Position M itoCanada is seeking a Chief Executive Officer to continue to shape and build on the foundation’s strategic pillars.
Historically the foundation has been based in Calgary, AB and Southern Ontario, consistent with the CEO’s place of residence, however the organization is open to alternative locations.
MitoCanada recently completed a strategic plan (2019-2024), and a brand strategy (2020).
The CEO will report to and support the Board of Directors, and will effectively implement the strategic plan and manage the organization’s programs, operations, finances, assets, human capital, contracts, stakeholder relationships/partnerships, branding, and overall community presence.
Opportunities and Challenges Ensure financial stability of the organization through various funding mechanisms including, donations (in-kind and financial), donor campaigns, government grants, philanthropy, events, and other initiatives.
Increase awareness, advocacy, education, relationships, partnerships and alliances with the corporate community, pharma sector, medical sector, medical research sector, governments, relevant agencies, media, other not-for-profit organizations, affected families, and other stakeholders.
Increase positive public visibility and outreach ensuring transparency in operations and communications, relentless determination and commitment to find a cure, and compassion.
Cultivate and maintain strong and effective relations with the Board, staff, volunteers, vendors, and donors, and as well as key community stakeholders; medical and research community, governments, private and public organizations.
Ensure the development and delivery of effective programs that contribute to the Strategic Plan and overall pursuit of a cure.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities Leadership, Profile, and Advocacy Provide strategic and tactical leadership to the organization on an ongoing basis.
Represent MitoCanada as the “face of the organization” and protect the integrity and reputation of the organization.
Lead the advocacy for a cure at provincial and national political and research levels within Canada.
Direct and guide a strong marketing and communications strategy through effective digital (website & social media) presence and follower/visitor experience for the organization.
Operational Management and Delivery Develop and implement Annual Operating Plans guided by and congruent with the Strategic Plan.
Monitor and manage for risks.
Ensure infrastructure, tools, relationships and resources align with the operational plan.
Financial Planning and Management Responsible for all financial planning and management.
Prepare and present an annual budget for Board of Directors approval.
Operational delivery of budget including regular monitoring and reporting.
Manage and Report, as required, by or for a program / grant or the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board.
Fundraising, Donor Relations, Fund Development, and Branding Recognize and apply MitoCananda’s brand strategy (2020) in all pursuits.
Within the annual operating plan, identify fundraising events, donor relation and other fund development initiatives.
Maintain an evergreen fund development plan that supports the budget and strategic plan.
Develop, foster and maintain positive and sustainable relationships with donors, families, research leaders, community groups, agencies, media, companies, volunteers, key supporting figures, and politicians.
Board Support Encourage and support collaborative and productive Board Governance.
Advise and support the Board of Directors in their role(s).
Ensure the development of agendas, report presentations and other supporting materials for Board meetings, Annual General Meetings and Board development and strategy sessions…etc.
Assist with Board member orientation.
Experience and Education Post secondary education in an associated or complimentary discipline combined with an MBA is an asset.
8 years’ experience in a senior leadership role having operational, financial and strategic management level accountabilities.
Not for Profit sector experience and experience with Board Governance are an asset.
Consideration will be given for individuals with less than 5 year’s experience in a senior leadership role, but demonstrating progressive leadership growth in terms of key responsibilities and accountabilities.

High level of integrity and accountability.
Ability to travel and work irregular hours as required.
