We are looking for a Manager, Public Affairs to provide high-level corporate and public communication assets, manage corporate media relations matters. Providing expert communications counsel and services to support the delivery of Humber River Hospital’s communications strategies.

Employment Type: Temporary Full Time (approxiamtely 6 months)

Reporting Relationship: Director, Corporate Communications and Community Relations


  • Anticipate and develop content to support response to or engagement with external media outlets or create external channels for Humber River Hospital as appropriate. Analyze coverage and outlets to determine best strategy for response. Identify opportunities, build and execute programs within the Humber River Hospital framework to build the brand and reputation of the hospital.
  • Draft and review responses to media inquiries, briefing notes and media releases to ensure consistent messaging related to the Hospital’s branding guidelines and communication policies
  • Support and occasionally lead the development of media strategies
  • Prepare and train other team members/subject matter experts within hospital to serve as spokespersons.
  • Serve as spokesperson as needed.
  • Lead the development and production of internal and external communication materials in alignment with corporate priorities.
  • Use exceptional strategic communications planning, writing, and editing skills (including internal and external communication needs) and develop communication programs and content to support the business needs of Humber River Hospital.
  • Support Director, VP and CEO in executing communication for all audiences, including slides, speeches and all employee messages.
  • Corporate and departmental/clinical issues management (for example public relations impact, media issues, brand protection and promotion)
  • Address complex public relations risks and issues associated with the content, production, distribution, and overall quality of external and internal communication, as referred from direct reports (e.g. negative media attention, user feedback, public relations issues)
  • Develop relationships with peers and associates across the organization to understand Humber River Hospital’s business/operations activities, to identify communications requirements, to share information and to resolve issues.
  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders (where applicable) to ensure project/communications deliverables and expectations are effectively managed.
  • Build relationships with industry colleagues, government representatives, and media/communications organizations to remain current on industry best practices and emerging programs, products and trends.
  • Support the Director by playing a key role in both proactive and reactive issues management.
  • Responsible for a designated client portfolio, and also plays a key role in building, leading and supervising the team, including an assessment of skill sets against current business needs.
  • Lead, direct, guide, and coordinate activities and workload to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of required digital and print communications throughout the organization (newsletter, annual report), media outlets, public, internet.
  • Schedule staff and enter/manage staff payroll and vacation requests.
  • Develop department operational budget; track and monitor budget variances.
  • Analyze print services to determine potential cost savings.
  • Editing and proof reading materials according the generally accepted principles of journalism and Humber River Hospital style guide.
  • Participate in development of strategic goals and programs that advance the business and drive employee engagement.
  • Works closely with the Director, Communications as a key resource and support, including serving in an acting capacity when the Director is out of the office.


  • Undergraduate Degree in Journalism, Media or Communications (Masters preferred)
  • Professional Communication Certification or membership in a recognized Public Relations association (i.e. Canadian Public Relations Society, Public Affairs Association of Canada, International Public Relations Association, ABC, or APR)
  • A minimum of five (5) years professional work experience in public affairs, corporate communications or mainstream media
  • A minimum of three (3) years of media relations experience
  • A minimum of three (3) years of people management experience
  • Proven experience in corporate communications or public affairs, writing, editing and developing crisis and issues management strategies in a healthcare or hospital (preferred)
  • High level of competency in MS Office, PowerPoint, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Content Management and user experience design
  • Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with physicians, inter-professional team members, and other stakeholders
  • Possesses highly developed analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, with demonstrated competency in information and communication technology
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational and coordination skills and the ability to prioritize multiple competing workload demands
  • Excellent organizational, critical appraisal and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High level of initiative and self-direction.
